When I first came to China, I set a goal to significantly improve my Chinese language skills over the course of about 3-4 years. This goal was to participate as a panelist on a local Chinese program, much like the unconventional discussions seen in “Abnormal Summit.” I believed this would aid my self-branding, whether I was running a personal business or working in a company. With this goal in mind, I was able to stay dedicated to studying Chinese for the past two years. Every morning before starting work, I began my day with Chinese tutoring. Even at work, whenever there was an opportunity for a presentation, I intentionally spent much more time preparing in Chinese. As a result of my hard work, I now assess my Chinese proficiency to be at the level of an elementary school student in the lower grades. However, my skills are still lacking to appear as a panelist on a broadcast. I believed I needed at least another year to improve my skills, but I recently changed my mind based on the advice of someone I met to discuss e-commerce business collaboration.
Their advice was that the world is changing every day, and there might not be a need to wait for a broadcast program at a television station, unsure if it will happen or not. Nowadays, there are many cases where individual media influence is even greater than that of terrestrial broadcasting. It doesn’t require special preparation, just a start. I plan to start my own content on the Chinese version of TikTok, using my limited Chinese skills to talk about e-commerce businesses between Korea and China. While I don’t have talents like famous TikTokers who dance and sing, I will continue consistently until the end of this year. I look forward to these attempts leading to exciting results.
